So yeah, pretty much not on dA anymore. At all.

I'm leaving my emotes up in case people still use those around chat.

I'm on tumblr a shit ton though. So I guess if you want to follow my obsessions, there's that. [x]

Looking for opinions related to my upcoming tumblr post (this weekend). It has to do with kids and the LGBT equal rights movement. You can check it out here: mymetaphorisbleeding.tumblr.co…

If you don't have a tumblr account and still want to ask a question, just use dA's Notes system. If you have your name on your page, I'll probably use that or your initials (e.g. If your name is Mary Kline, I'd put Mary or M. K.). Otherwise, or if you request it, I'll just put anonymous. I won't use your dA username.

Thanks!

☮ Zanne

P.S. There is a link to my dA page on tumblr, so if you comment here with your question I can't promise anonymity if someone checks out this journal and matches up the questions.

Autumn!

5 min read
Down here in Texas it's finally starting to feel like early Fall... in mid October. Man I need to move out of this State.

Thanks to everyone who's supported the first issue of "Those dAmn Emotes" - which can be found here!

Opus Oops

Seems like Indae's hosting has been postponed. Instead DryBones44 is hosting a Transportation themed contest. Details can be found at the EmoticonOpus blog here. I already know what I'll be making...

NaNoWriMo 2011

NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, starts up once more on November 1st! For those who don't know, NaNoWriMo is an annual global event where participants do what they can to write a 50,000-word novel in just 30 days. Due to a crazy busy schedule, I won't be participating, but I will be cheering on those who do. You can chat with current and past NaNoWriters as well as supporters in the :#NaNoWriMo: chatroom.

In the Family

My fantastic mother kpt has decided to start submitting work again to her dA account. You should head over and check out her fantabulous kiln-formed glass and mosaic works.

Blogosphere

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on my poll about blogs. I still don't have a solid decision. I think I'm going to go with my father's suggestion and try a "test" entry on both Blogspot and tumblr. I'll be sure to give links when they're up (hopefully this weekend?).

That Real Life Thing

Oh man. This marks midterm, which means everything picks up a notch in pace from here until mid-December. I think this weekend might be my last breather until then. Two major projects, Sigma Tau Delta, Subplots: Friends of Creative Writers, and reading for REAL are going to keep me very, very busy. But I swear I'll still lurk around dA! I may be slightly insane(r) while I do is all.

As always, I am still taking emote/icon requests. I may just be a bit slow in getting to them is all.

P.S. If you haven't noticed my Twitter feed, I should comment that I'm a supporter of the Occupy Wall Street stuff going on right now. Here's a pretty powerful video about some of the issues with police brutality www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGRXCg… . To learn more check out occupywallstreet.org.

Volume One (1)

Did You Know?

:pointr: "The first script I am aware of to incorporate user-made emotes was siebenzehn's dAmn.extend. Each emote was pre-programmed, leaving the user with little option for customization beyond learning to code and modifying it themselves." -zikes

Have You Seen This Emote?

:lel: by PoisonTouch Maybe you've seen this emote around, but weren't sure why :lel: did't produce the intended result. That's because :lel: is an "unofficial" emote (i.e. not on the dA emote list) and requires an add-on called SuperdAmn1. The creator, PoisonTouch, was kind enough to answer a few questions about his emote-making.

When did you start making emotes? What inspired you to do so?

I started making emotes within the first week of joining dA! I chose to make emotes because of how influencial in conversations they seemed to be.  You could easily replace whole sentences with a cute little 15x15 emote and still manage to get your point across.

One of the big names around that time was zikes (because of his awesome script that let people use custom emotes in chats) and I'd stumbled upon one of his tutorials. It shocked me how effective emotes were yet seemingly so simple to make.

Do you have a personal favourite out of your own emotes?

It's so hard to choose! I have a few that I really like but I guess I'd have to say that my favourite is: :screaming: by PoisonTouch
I didn't expect it to come out so well! Makes me want to cuddle it, but the thing I like the most about it is that I can use it to measure my improvement. This was the original emote: :scream: by PoisonTouch and it's somewhat embarrassing to look at now. I can definitely say I've come a long way.

You have a few emotes that are popular around #devart. How does that feel?

It feels great. It's always nice to see that people like my stuff enough to use it!

Do you yourself frequent dAmn?

I used to hang around dAmn a lot about until about a year ago. I feel like dAmn is a really good place to be if you want to make emotes, especially the chat friendly kind. You find yourself noticing what sort of emote people would need to express themselves in a certain way.

Hopefully I'll return soon and maybe see those emotes of mine that are popular :3

So let's talk about "lel." What inspired that lovely expression?

Well, I guess you could say it all started with the legendary  emote. Different emoticonists made emote revamps and spin-offs of the  emote that got added into the custom emotes script as: :lul: ( rvmp by Bad-Blood by bad-blood), and the original :lal: (which was made by napzter and later removed, but then revamped by me since apparently people in chatrooms couldn't live without an emote with a spinning grin :lal: by PoisonTouch)

A friend of mine, ash--tray (deactivated now) made :lil:. Though I don't really remember what it looked like besides that it was orange and had crazy eyes! A pattern had formed (:lal: ,__, :lil:,, :lul: ) and I found myself wanting to fill that gap.

Thanks for your time. Do you have any last comments you'd like to make?

It's been a long time since I've made any emotes, and I apologise to any fans I have for that. Also, I hope this was an good read :la:

Your Face!

Did you know that even the "official" emotes (i.e. those on the dA emote list) have deviant creators? I sat down (virtually speaking) with Lythero to talk about his infamous :stare:

When did you start making emotes? What inspired you to do so?

I started making emotes around June in 2006. At the time I was visiting deviantART chatrooms more often, making more friends, and having a blast. But back then, zikes' emoticon plugin was a very new system (we were far off from electricnet's incredible SuperdAmn, at least).

The amount of emoticons weren't that great, and the peeps in the chatrooms I visited found it boring being stuck with the same few amount of faces to type out. So when I saw zikes' tutorials, I gave it a go and found out that I actually really enjoyed making and animating emotes for all my friends to use. So I made more!

Many of your emotes are staples in dAmn. How does that feel?

When I was constantly stuck in dA chatrooms, I was seriously thrilled to see more and more people using the emotes I made. I'd sometimes check out chatrooms I'd never visited before out of curiosity just to see what uses other people got out of them for a laugh.

Nowadays, It's still really cool to see a lot of people getting enjoyment out of any emotes I've ever uploaded on dA.

Two of your emotes are on the official deviantART emote list. Let's talk about "stare." What prompted this emote? I mean, what a face.

:stare: exists because I accidentally looked in a mirror one day.

Oh, and I got the idea from another emote that I used on Windows Live Messenger pretty often. Annoyingly, I lost that emote in one of Messenger's many trivial updates and never found it again, bt looked more like the typical MSN emotes; bigger, softer, yellower. I wanted to be able to portray a similar emotion while using dAmn chatrooms and so remade it from scratch with some necessary eye shadow and the smaller 15x15 size.

You uploaded the emote in 2007, but it seems like it didn't gain widespread popularity until 2009 when it received a DD. What was your reaction?

Something along the lines of ":stare: Oh come on what the hell gaiz this emote took me less than two minutes to make it doesn't need a Daily De-" etc.

It recently went on the official dA emote list. Wow! How does that feel?

:starewut: by Lythero

There have been many variations on the emote all over dAmn. Do you have a personal favourite?

I can't possibly pick a favourite. There are far too many and I like several different ones for different reasons (some friends made AWESOME tribute drawings rather than remakes of the emote, and I love them the best). However, two :stare: adaptations that always make me grin are :staranoid: by noodi10 and :starestar: by Vile-I-Am

I have a folder where I try to keep all the remakes grouped up into the one big collection of favourites, here. If anyone notices a remake missing from the bunch, please lemme know and I'll be sure to add it post-haste.

Thanks for your time. Do you have any last comments you'd like to make?

NO PROBLEM. And uhhhhh, I'd like to mention that while a lot of it is just a handful of pixels,  making emoticons can be a pretty expressive and impressive medium if you really put the effort in, whether it be bitchin' shading or crazy frame-by-frame animations.

The community for emotes got so huge the past few years that I didn't find it necessary to keep making emotes myself (plus university called), but if people still really want more emotes I'll try to conjure up some more every now and then.

F. Y. I. (For Your Information)

:pointr: FAQ #53: How do I use Emoticons? Where are they?
:pointr: Your friendly neighbourhood emote CV is Krissi001. She has lots of information on her page regarding emotes, including a list of emote related groups here on deviantART!
:pointr: Be sure to check out Mirz123's group Emotizine, "a resource that lists all articles and goings-on in the [emote] community."
:pointr: 1You can download electricnet's SuperdAmn add-on by following the instructs in the artist's comments here.
:pointr: Want to suggest an FYI to add? Send me a note!

Thanks
A special thanks to the following people for their help and support on making this first volume a reality: zikes, Lythero, PoisonTouch, Krissi001.

Find something wrong? Or is there something you want to see in a future volume? Send me a note!
